Blue Birds in watercolor- Creative Corner

Take advantage of a beautiful day and take the kids outside.

Listen.

What do they hear?

With spring comes a beautiful bouquet of sounds!

Listen for a bird singing. See if your kids can find what bird is singing what song.

Find it?

Now, what color is that bird? Is it one color, or two? What’s the dominant color?

Paint the birds you observed!

Blue, red, yellow, orange! Let them explore the color. What did they see?

Use watercolor paints and let the colors bleed together to create new colors!

Notice the difference when you paint directly onto the dry paper, then see what happens when you take a clean brush, dipped in clean water, and paint a simple water wash over the part you wish to paint. Then add watercolors. Add two colors, one on each end.

Which way allows the color to blend more easily?

Which way do you get stronger color?

Let your kids enjoy the medium, explore, and learn through the fun of painting!

Let them tell you what they see happening. Encourage them. Inspire them through watercolors and the joys of spring!

    Hi Jen,
I just stumbled upon your site. Wonderful stuff! I heard your inspiring father speak this past weekend at a homeschool conference. (Do I have those relations right?) I’m a homeschooling mama to five little ones (the oldest is 8). I’m also an artist trying to eek out little nibbles of time to create. I think your creative corner is a great idea! I’ll keep an eye on it, and on days when my energy is high, we’ll give them a try. Art is big in our house. :o ) I like to dabble and try any medium, but I especially like to work in clay and also mixed media on paper (oil pastel, marker, pencil, watercolor crayon, etc). The guild this summer sounds simply IN.CRED.I.BLE. I can hardly imagine! Hope you have an amazing time there!

Thanks Becky! Yep, you got it right :) Glad you enjoyed hearing him speak. I do think the Guild will be a fantastic experience for everyone. Looking forward to it!

Glad to hear art is such a part of your family’s life! I’d love to see what your kids come up w/ when they try some of these Creative Corner projects! I know homeschooling keeps you busy! (understatement)
Feel free to post some of their work on our Facebook page when they’ve tried it! Would also love to see some of your work.
      Take care!
